True story…all of a sudden you wake up one day, step out of bed and notice that the bottom of your foot is hurting…badly. Maybe it hurts back by your heel or perhaps right in the center. So you ignore it for a while, walk on the outside of your foot, cross your fingers and hope it will go away.
A few weeks later you are wearing the most comfortable shoes you own and maybe a gel cushion or arch support, and it still hurts. Off to the doctor you go.
It’s plantar fasciitis (PF) you find out, an inflammation of the fascial band that supports the arch of your foot. You might get sent home with a night splint to keep your foot in a 90 degree position while you sleep to keep things stretched out (NOT comfortable) or maybe just some ibuprofen and ice. Hopefully that does the trick. If not, maybe a referral for a brief stint of PT will help. At this point you (and I) are still hoping that it can just go away the same way it arrived!
Well, suppose it doesn’t go away and you feel like you have tried everything?! You have been limping around and can’t get where you want to go fast enough and to top it all off now your knee, hip and back are starting to complain about the way you shuffle around like a gorilla. OK, so I have a sense of humor but this is not funny anymore, right?
This is where CranioSacral Therapy (CST) comes in…
CST is a very light touch technique that impacts the system of the brain and spinal cord which in turn affects the entire central nervous system (CNS). It uses the body’s natural healing processes to eliminate deep restrictions that are causing pain and dysfunction. It can also reset the nervous system to a calmer more natural state.
So how can it help Plantar Fascitis, right? Well as it turns out, the fascia is sometimes only sore due to restrictions in the spinal column (neck and back) creating a pull all the way down the spine, continuing to pull on the fascia and nerves into the legs and feet causing too much tension which results in pain. Most clients I see with PF have had neck or back trouble long before their PF reared its ugly head. Picture a tug of war beginning at the top of your spine pulling downward.
A skilled practitioner of CST will release these restrictions in the spine and nervous system allowing slack in the system to return. It is only then you will have success in your calf stretches, towel grabs, icing etc…and finally get back to pain-free joyful living.
