“Humanity”
Yoga used to be this foreign thing that “zen” people did to contort themselves into positions I could never dream of making. The idea that it could change my life forever was not anywhere on my horizon until my late 40’s. In fact, I tried it in my 20s while I was injured and was not successful.
Now it has become a place of refuge, my mat my haven, and a safe place to explore.
The theme of this International Yoga Day is humanity.
I see humanity as my own human-ness and that of others. Let’s talk about yoga and humanity…
Yoga Asanas or shapes we physically move through are an important limb of yoga but I have learned that there are 7 others equally important. I will allow my thoughts to wander a moment to what speaks to me today.
Rather than having any particular religious affiliation, yoga offers moral codes that guide us to be our best in any given moment and to embrace others as equal.
It encourages you to be non-harmful, not only to other people and things but also to yourself. Internal unspoken thoughts have a huge impact on how you show up in the world, be kind.
Yoga has an aspect of self reflection, how can we be more in tune with what we need and the needs of others. Where can we improve ourselves and be less judgmental, more forgiving? Can we tune into our bodies and our breath while on our mats and then take that insight out into the world?
You might ask yourself today, how much calmness and comfort can you carry and share in a world where humans need relief from anxiety and depression? As you step off your mat and wander off into the world may you be just a little better, just a little brighter and just a little more human.
